How do backup codes work?
Account & SecurityLast reviewed Oct 8, 2026
When you turn on two-factor protection you get 10 backup codes. Each works once.
If you can't use your authenticator app, type a backup code into the normal sign-in code box. Spaces and dashes are ignored, and capitals don't matter.
The codes are shown only when you turn two-factor on, so store them somewhere safe outside your phone, such as a password manager.
